Bed Frames

Bed Frames Buying Guide

A bed frame is the bed itself: the base, sides and usually the headboard, ready for a mattress. Choose the style and material first, then check the base, the size and whether you need storage.

Bed frame styles

• Ottoman beds: the base lifts up to reveal storage under the whole bed. See ottoman beds.
• Fabric beds: upholstered frames in linen, velvet, boucle and more, from simple panels to Chesterfield and winged designs. See fabric beds.
• Wooden beds: solid oak, pine, painted and rattan styles, including four poster beds. See wooden beds.
• Metal beds: black, cream, brass, chrome and nickel finishes. See metal beds.
• Adjustable beds: electric beds that raise your head and feet. See adjustable beds.
• Guest and day beds: a pull-out bed or a sofa-style day bed for visitors. See guest beds and day beds.

What sits under the mattress

• Sprung slats: slightly curved slats that flex under your weight and let air move round the mattress. The most common base in our range.
• Solid slats: straight slats for a firmer feel.
• Platform top: a solid, flat top, as on our upholstered ottoman beds.

Whichever base you choose, use a mattress made for a bed frame of that size.

Mattress included or not?

Most bed frames are sold without a mattress, so you can choose exactly the one you want. On many frames you can add a mattress when you order, or browse all mattresses. Our guest beds and most adjustable beds come with mattresses.

Sizes

Most frames come in 4'6 double and 5'0 king size, many in 3'0 single, 4'0 small double and 6'0 super king. Check the size table on each product: frames are larger than the mattress, so measure your room. Read our UK bed sizes guide.

Assembly

Many frames arrive flat packed and need basic self assembly. Each product page says what to expect.
