Pillow Top Mattresses
A pillow top adds an extra layer of memory foam, gel or wool across the top of the mattress for a softer, cushioned feel without losing the support underneath. Pillow tops suit side sleepers in particular, easing pressure on hips and shoulders. Available in every standard size.

Pillow Top Mattresses Buying Guide
A pillow top mattress has an extra layer of soft filling stitched to the top, for a plush, cushioned feel without losing the support of the springs underneath.
What is in the pillow top
The top layer may be wool, cotton, cashmere, memory foam or gel, depending on the mattress. Natural fillings feel soft and breathable, memory foam moulds to your shape, and gel is designed to feel cooler. Most of our pillow top mattresses have pocket springs underneath, from 1000 to 5000.
Comfort and depth
Because of the extra layer, our pillow top mattresses are deep: 28cm to 30cm. Most are medium firm or medium. The pillow top softens the surface, so a medium firm pillow top mattress feels gentler than a medium firm mattress without one. Check that your fitted sheets are deep enough.
Who it suits
- Side sleepers who want a soft surface for their shoulders and hips.
- Anyone who finds their mattress too firm but does not want to lose the support of springs.
- Couples: with pocket springs underneath, you feel less movement when your partner turns over.
If you sleep on your front, a pillow top may let your hips sink too far: a firm mattress without one usually suits you better.
Sizes
Every size from 3'0 single to 6'0 super king, many in 2'6 small single, and a good choice as a 6'0 super king zip and link mattress. Want the bed as well? See our pillow top divan beds.
Looking after it
A pillow top mattress has a top and a bottom, so turn it round regularly rather than flipping it over. Read how to care for your mattress.
Pillow Top Mattresses FAQs
What is a pillow top mattress?
A pillow top mattress has an extra layer of soft filling stitched to the top, such as wool, cashmere or memory foam. It gives a plush, cushioned feel over the support of the springs underneath.
Can I flip a pillow top mattress?
No. A pillow top mattress has a top and a bottom, so turn it round from head to foot regularly instead, especially in the first few months, so the fillings settle evenly.
How deep is a pillow top mattress?
Our pillow top mattresses are 28cm to 30cm deep. Check that your fitted sheets are deep enough and that your headboard still shows above the mattress.
Who is a pillow top mattress good for?
A pillow top suits side sleepers and anyone who likes a soft surface but still wants the support of springs. Most of ours are medium firm or medium, so they feel cushioned without being too soft.
