Gel Mattresses Buying Guide
A gel mattress has gel added to its comfort layers. Gel is designed to draw heat away from your body, so these mattresses suit anyone who sleeps hot.
What is underneath the gel
- Pocket springs and gel: individual springs with a gel comfort layer, for support and less partner disturbance.
- Memory foam and gel: the moulded feel of memory foam, designed to stay cooler.
- Open coil and gel: a good value way to add a cooler feel.
Comfort
Most of our gel mattresses are medium, with medium firm and firm options too. Many also have wool or cotton fillings, which are breathable and help you stay comfortable through the night.
Who it suits
- Hot sleepers who wake up too warm on a standard mattress.
- Memory foam fans who want the moulded feel but find all memory foam too warm.
- Couples, where two people sleeping close together make a bed warmer.
Keeping cool at night
Your mattress is only part of the picture. Breathable cotton bedding, a lighter duvet in summer and a cool, airy bedroom all help. Read our top tips for the perfect night's sleep.
Sizes and beds
Every size from 3'0 single to 6'0 super king, and most in 2'6 small single. Want the bed as well? See our gel divan beds. Compare with memory foam mattresses.
Gel Mattresses FAQs
What is a gel mattress?
A gel mattress has gel added to its comfort layers. Gel is designed to draw heat away from your body, so you feel cooler as you sleep.
Are gel mattresses good for hot sleepers?
Yes, that is what they are designed for. For the coolest feel, choose gel with pocket springs, as the springs also let air move through the mattress.
Gel or memory foam: what is the difference?
Memory foam moulds to your shape but can feel warm. Gel is designed to feel cooler. Many of our mattresses combine the two, so you get the moulded feel with a cooler surface.
